The Brief

SEC Member Thurrock Council wanted to undertake a major refurbishment spanning nine residential blocks in Grays, Essex. Their aim was to appoint an experienced contractor to carry out re-cladding works and all other associated external works to the properties. After approaching us we worked with them to understand their requirements and then administered a mini-tender via Lot 1a of our Internal & External Building Works framework.

After a successful mini-tender Thurrock Council appointed Axis Europe to carry out the works.

Customer: Thurrock Council

Contract Value: £14m

Contract Term: 2 years

The Solution

Thurrock Council required a new EWI system for nine high-rise residential blocks comprising 500 homes, as the previous cladding had reached the end of its lifespan. Before re-cladding could begin, Axis removed the existing panels and surveyed the walls and substrate of each building. This enabled their team to assess the structural stability of the blocks, identify areas required for repair and confirm the suitability of the chosen external insulation system.

Axis’ specialist team then carried out the necessary remedial and preparative work, fully in accordance with BS EN 1504, before installing a Weatherby A1 Class Render insulation system. The new external insulation provides greater thermal efficiency and weatherproofing for the buildings and is BS 8414 tested. We decorated the EWI system with a Silicone render and matching primer, providing the towers with a fresh, attractive finish.

Resident Engagement Was Key

Working in partnership with Thurrock Council, Axis delivered a number of initiatives to support resitends living within the dwellings. These included:

  • A Resident Action Day which gave residents the opportunity to clear out any unwanted waste.
  • A Children’s Summer Art Project for young people. All entries will be displayed on Axis’ hoarding on the Seabrooke Rise Estate.
  • Attending Grays’ Safer Streets event with the police, fire brigade and ambulance services, answering residents’ and business owners’ queries about the works.
  • Axis’ Thurrock team also donated £200 worth of teddy bears for Seabrooke Rise’s’ Christmas Charity Event for MacMillan Cancer Charity.
